Designer insurance starts with an uncomfortable truth: your work is judged twice, once by the client who approves it and again by reality when it’s built, printed, worn or shipped. When reality disagrees, professional indemnity insurance is what stands between a flawed concept and a bill for the rework, which is why PI leads the policy for designers of every kind.
Professional Saver’s insurance policies cover designers and design consultancies from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity, equipment and employers’ liability as options. Quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.
Designer insurance is the umbrella for the types of insurance a design business carries: concepts that clients act on, deliverables that get built from, and studios full of the kit that produces both. The package flexes across the design world, covering graphic designers, interior designers, product and fashion designers, CAD technicians, engineering design consultants and design agency owners alike.
The claims it exists for are the design trade’s own: negligent or flawed concepts that force expensive reworks, constructability problems surfacing late in a build, specifications that turned out infeasible or incomplete. Without cover, the cost of putting deliverables right can threaten the viability of a design business; with it, the policy carries the compensation claims and the legal costs.

Professional indemnity insurance is the core for most designers. If a client claims your design caused them financial loss, from a rework bill to a missed launch, professional indemnity insurance covers the compensation and your legal defence, including claims over negligence, breach of confidentiality and accidental infringement of intellectual property, which for designers is the claim that arrives most often. Client contracts and agencies increasingly require professional indemnity insurance for designers at a named level of cover before work starts.
Public liability insurance covers the physical half: a client injured visiting your studio, or property damaged while you’re measuring up, installing or presenting on site. Public liability insurance comes as standard with every policy at £1 million, with options up to £10 million.
Equipment insurance protects the business equipment a design studio actually runs on: workstations, tablets, cameras, sample libraries, with a £100 excess through our business contents and equipment cover. Employers’ liability joins the policy when the studio takes on staff, as the law usually requires.
The whole design family, each with cover shaped to its risks, and several with pages of their own: illustrators and graphic designers, computer games designers, animators, exhibition designers and jewellery designers among them. Interior design has a dedicated page too, at interior designers insurance. So do fashion designers, colour and image consultants and system designers, each of which is the better starting point if that is the work you actually sell.
The common thread is that a design business sells judgement made visible. Whether the deliverable is a brand identity, a garment pattern or a games level, the insurance question is the same: who pays when the client says the work fell short, and who pays when the studio’s physical world misbehaves. The policy answers both.
From £55* a year for the base policy, which already includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover. Professional indemnity is the main variable: the level of cover your contracts require and the value of the projects your designs feed into set the price, with your claims history alongside. A freelance graphic designer with a laptop pays near the bottom of the range; a design consultancy signing off specifications for construction pays for the consequences its drawings carry. No broker needed: quote online, itemised, in about five minutes, with monthly instalments available.
Design is the profession of making judgement visible, and visible judgement attracts opinions, some of them with solicitors. Get a designer insurance quote online from £55* a year, backed by an insurer rated AA- (Stable) by Standard & Poor’s, and let the policy hold the risk while you hold the pen.

If clients act on your work, yes, and the pressure usually arrives via a contract clause before it arrives via a claim. Agencies and larger clients routinely require proof of professional indemnity cover, and an IP infringement allegation, the graphic designer’s most common claim, is expensive to defend even when you win. Freelancers sit at the cheapest end of the premium range, which makes the maths short.
Start with your contracts: they usually name a figure, £1 million being the common floor. Beyond that, size the cover to the biggest loss your design could plausibly cause, which is rarely the fee and often the cost of what gets built from your work. You can raise the limit as your projects grow.
Same covers, different weights. A freelancer leans on PI and equipment cover; a studio adds employers’ liability (usually a legal requirement with staff) and higher public liability for visiting clients. The quote walks through it either way, and the policy adjusts as a freelance practice becomes a studio.
Design work that touches construction carries longer liability tails and sometimes statutory duties, so describe the work precisely when you quote; that’s what shapes the right PI insurance limit and confirms the cover fits. If your design work is mostly engineering, our engineers insurance page covers that world directly.
Equipment cover protects the tools of the design business; tell us where the kit lives and travels when you quote, so that if you ever make a claim, where the laptop was doesn’t complicate the insurance claim. Client presentations and on-site surveys count as how you work, so say so.
