What insurance do animators need?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Animation insurance covers work that is judged twice: once against the brief and once against the deadline. A commercial delivered late for a product launch, a character a rights holder says looks familiar, a client who decides the finished sequence isn’t what they signed off: animation’s claims come from the gap between creative judgement and commercial consequences, and they name the animator who did the work.

Professional Saver arranges business insurance for animators, motion designers and small animation studios from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity scaled to the productions you deliver. Get a quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

Professional indemnity insurance carries animation’s native claims. If a client alleges your work caused them financial loss, a deliverable that missed its brief, a deadline whose slippage cost a campaign, an asset that had to be re-made, professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and the legal costs of the defence. The same cover answers the intellectual property side, which in animation is everywhere: character similarity, reference that travelled too directly into the frame, music and footage used beyond the licence. IP claims don’t require bad faith, only an arguable resemblance, and defending even a weak one without cover costs more than years of premiums.

Public liability insurance covers the physical side of the work: client meetings, studio visits, shoots and events where your setup shares space with other people. If someone suffers injury or property damage around your work, damaging equipment at a client’s premises is the classic, public liability insurance covers the compensation and legal fees, with £1 million as standard and options up to £10 million where production companies and venues require more. If your work extends into live shoots or events, describe that side at quote stage; a desk-based policy and an events insurance risk are different animals, and honesty is what keeps the certificate dependable.

Equipment insurance earns its place in a trade that runs on serious hardware: workstations, tablets, monitors and the drives your archive lives on, covered against theft, loss and damage (£100 excess). Employers’ liability insurance is usually a legal requirement once a studio employs anyone, and animation’s crewing habits, freelancers and contractors working under your direction on a production, can count toward it; describe the model at quote stage.

Why do animators need insurance?

Because creative work is subjective and deadlines are not. A client can argue about whether the animation worked; nobody argues about whether it shipped on time. Both arguments arrive as PI claims, and the policy funds the defence either way.

Because every frame contains other people’s rights. Characters, styles, music, reference: animation is built close to existing IP by nature. The claims that follow are arguable rather than wicked, which is exactly the kind a small business can’t afford to argue alone.

Because the kit is the studio. Losing the workstations doesn’t pause the business politely; it stops every project simultaneously, which is business interruption by another name. Equipment insurance is the difference between a bad week and a lost quarter of deadlines.

What does our animation policy cover?

Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then tailor the insurance policy to the studio:

  • Professional indemnity for missed briefs, deadline claims and IP disputes, at the level your production contracts require
  • Equipment insurance for workstations, tablets and the technical equipment the work runs on
  • Employers’ liability for staff and directed freelancers, usually a legal requirement
  • Personal accident cover, because a small studio runs on a handful of irreplaceable people

Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad is included for up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada.

How much does animator insurance cost?

From £55* a year for the base policy. The cost then follows the work: the level of professional indemnity your clients require, the value of equipment insured, whether you employ anyone, and your claims history. A freelance animator with a single workstation sits at the affordable end; a studio with staff and a render setup insures more because more is at stake. Studios needing full entertainment insurance, cast, sets, shoot interruption, are shopping for a different product and should say so. FAQs

Animation Insurance FAQs

Freelancers arguably need it more: production contracts and agency rosters demand proof of PI at stated levels regardless of headcount, and a freelancer has no studio structure between a claim and their own finances. The £55* starting point assumes exactly that one-person shape.

Allegations that your professional work infringed someone’s rights sit on the professional indemnity side, which funds the defence and any settlement. What no policy replaces is licence hygiene: keep records of music sync, font, footage and reference rights per production, because the paper trail is the cheapest defence you’ll ever own.

Cover can extend to freelancers and contractors working under your direction, and they may count as employees for employers’ liability purposes whatever the paperwork calls them. Describe how you actually crew productions when you quote; it decides how things stand if you make a claim.

One policy, described honestly: motion design, illustration and animation share the same claim types and quote the same way. Our design insurance page covers the wider design family, and our artists insurance page covers fine-art practice, if your work spans several disciplines.
