What is short term income protection?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million or £5 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Short term income protection answers the question self-employment never stops asking: what happens to the money if you can’t work? There’s no employer’s sick pay behind a professional practice, and savings drain fast when the invoicing stops. This cover replaces part of your income while illness or injury keeps you from working, so a bad few months stays a health problem instead of becoming a business one.

With Professional Saver, short term income protection is an optional cover added to the same policy that carries your public liability and professional indemnity, from £55* a year for the base policy. Quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

Short term income protection is insurance that pays you a regular benefit, replacing part of your lost income, when you’re unable to work because of illness or injury, for a limited period rather than until retirement. That “short term” is the honest difference from the long-term income protection sold by life insurers: shorter maximum payout periods, simpler underwriting, and premiums to match. For many self-employed professionals it’s the pragmatic middle ground between “nothing but savings” and a lifetime product with a lifetime price.

The details that matter, your benefit level, how long payments can last, and the waiting period before they start, are set when you take the cover and confirmed in your policy documents. Read them before you need them; that’s true of every income protection product on the market, ours included.

Why do self-employed professionals need income protection?

Because the safety net is you. Statutory sick pay belongs to employment; the self-employed fall back on savings and state benefits, and neither is designed to carry a mortgage. If a month without invoicing would hurt and three would be serious, that’s the gap this cover exists for.

Because your liability covers protect everyone but you. Public liability protects the public, professional indemnity protects clients, employers’ liability protects staff. Income protection is the one cover in the stack whose beneficiary is you, and it’s the one professionals most often skip.

Because recovery shouldn’t be rushed by arithmetic. The pressure to work before you’re well is a financial pressure. A replacement income, even a partial one for a limited period, buys the recovery time your accountant can’t.

How does it fit with the rest of the policy?

Short term income protection sits in the optional covers alongside personal accident insurance, which pays a lump sum for specified injuries regardless of fault, and the two do different jobs: personal accident answers a moment, income protection answers a period. Many one-person businesses carry both, next to the standard covers every policy includes: public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover.

If your bigger worry is your equipment or your legal costs, those covers live in the same quote, which is the point: one policy, adjusted to the actual shape of your risks, one renewal.

How much does short term income protection cost?

The base Professional Saver policy starts from £55* a year, and income protection is priced on top according to your age, work, the benefit you choose and the waiting period you accept. Longer waiting periods and shorter benefit periods cost less; the quote shows the trade-offs itemised, in about five minutes, with monthly instalments available. The honest comparison isn’t against other insurance, it’s against how long your savings would genuinely last.

FAQs

Short Term Income Protection FAQs

A valid claim on a live policy pays according to its terms; the practical discipline is knowing those terms before claiming. Waiting periods, benefit levels and exclusions are all set out in your policy documents, and describing your health and work honestly at quote stage is what makes a later claim straightforward. If any term is unclear, ask before you buy; we’d rather explain a clause than dispute a claim.

Duration and price. Long-term products, typically from life insurers, can pay until retirement and are underwritten accordingly. Short term income protection pays for a limited period per claim, which covers the most common reality, months of recovery rather than decades, at a premium a small business can carry alongside its other covers.

Anyone whose income stops when they do: sole traders, freelancers, consultants and small firm owners without sick pay. The nearer your finances run to the month, the more work this cover does. Employees with generous sick pay have less need; the self-employed are exactly the audience.

Notify us as soon as illness or injury stops you working, with the medical evidence the policy describes. The waiting period runs from when you stopped working, so early notification protects the timeline. From there, payments follow the schedule in your documents while a valid claim continues.

Yes; it’s an optional cover, added at quote or at renewal. If your circumstances have changed since you first bought, new mortgage, new dependants, thinner buffer, renewal is the natural moment to add the one cover that pays you.
