Protecting IT professionals with public liability insurance from less than £55* per year

Get a QuoteOur standard cover is:
IT contractor insurance exists because your contract says it does: somewhere in the agency terms or the client’s schedule is a clause naming professional indemnity and public liability cover, usually with limits, always with a deadline. And behind the paperwork sits the real risk, because code, configurations and consultancy advice can all cost a client money when something goes wrong.
Professional Saver covers IT contractors and consultants from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity matched to your contract’s requirements. Quote online in five minutes; your proof of cover downloads the same day, which is usually the same week the agency asked for it.
Two covers carry the contract, in the combination agencies call PI and PL cover:
Professional indemnity answers for the work itself. If a client alleges your work caused them financial loss, a failed migration, a security flaw, a missed requirement or negligent advice, professional indemnity insurance covers your legal defence and any damages. Most IT contracts and recruitment agencies now require PI, often at £1 million or more, before you can start.
Public liability answers for the physical world: a client tripping over your laptop bag on site, a spilled coffee across a server room keyboard. Public liability insurance comes as standard with every policy at £1 million, covering accidental injury to a client or member of the public and accidental damage to their property; contracts commonly stipulate £2 million or £5 million, with options up to £10 million.
Around them: business contents and equipment cover for your kit (£100 excess), legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, and employers’ liability if you grow beyond yourself.

This deserves its own section, because it’s the cover IT buyers actually search for and the one contracts scrutinise. Professional indemnity insurance for IT contractors covers the advice, code and configurations you deliver; professional liability insurance for IT consultants is the same cover under its international name. Claims in IT rarely involve anyone falling over: they involve a data migration that corrupted records, an integration that missed its spec, a recommendation that didn’t survive contact with production. Professional negligence, breach of confidentiality and breach of copyright all live under the same cover.
Two properties of PI matter for contractors specifically. It works on a claims-made basis, so the policy needs to be live when the claim arrives, not just when the work was done; keep it running between contracts rather than switching it off on the bench. And agency and contract requirements name specific limits, so match the policy to the clause and keep the certificate where you can send it within the hour.
Because the alternative is three renewals and a spreadsheet. Every Professional Saver policy bundles public liability, products liability, legal expenses and financial loss cover as standard from £55* a year, with professional indemnity added at the level your contracts require. One quote, one renewal date, one set of documents for every agency onboarding pack.
The IT world underneath is covered by specialism too: software engineers, network engineers, managed service providers and computer programmers each have their own page, and the quote adapts to what you actually build and run.
Policies start from £55* a year, and that base already includes public liability and the other automatic covers; professional indemnity is the variable, priced on your contract’s required limit, the risk profile of your trade, the project values your work touches, and your claims history. Monthly instalments are available. For most contractors the whole stack costs less than one billable day a year, which is a useful way to think about it when the renewal lands mid-contract.
Every IT contract ends its onboarding the same way: send over your insurance certificates. Get an IT contractor insurance quote online from £55* a year, backed by an insurer rated AA- (Stable) by Standard & Poor’s, and answer the email before the agency sends the reminder.

In practice, yes: most agency contracts and client schedules make PI a condition of engagement, typically at £1 million or more, and IR35-adjacent working practices make carrying your own business insurance part of looking genuinely in business on your own account. If a client sues, the claim lands on your limited company and, practically, on you; without insurance in place, the legal fees and damages are yours too. Beyond the contract, PI is the cover that answers when your work itself is blamed for a loss.
From £55* a year for the base policy including public liability, with professional indemnity priced on top according to the limit your contracts demand. Low-risk desk-based contracting sits at the affordable end of the market; the online quote gives your exact figure in about five minutes.
Read the schedule: agencies typically require professional indemnity and public liability at named limits, sometimes employers’ liability insurance even for sole directors of a limited company (a quirk of standard agency terms worth checking). Match the policy to those numbers, send the certificate, and keep both continuous so the next placement doesn’t need new paperwork.
Yes, in one policy: public liability is automatic in every Professional Saver policy, and professional indemnity is added during the quote. You never need to reconcile two insurers’ certificates for one contract again.
Professional indemnity covers claims arising from your professional services, including some data-handling responsibilities; we don’t sell a standalone cyber insurance policy. If your work carries significant cyber exposure, say so when you quote so the cover is set up honestly around it.
Same day, online: quote, buy, and your documents appear in the portal ready to download. When an agency is holding a start date open, that turnaround is the feature that matters most.
