Included as standard with our public liability policy
Our standard cover is:
Product liability insurance covers compensation claims when a product you’ve sold, supplied, installed or repaired causes injury to someone or damage to their property. You don’t have to have manufactured the thing; if it passed through your business on its way to the person it hurt, the claim can land with you.
With Professional Saver, products liability isn’t a decision you need to agonise over: it’s one of our automatic covers, included in every policy alongside public liability, legal expenses, financial loss and accidental death cover, from £55* a year. This page explains what it does, who needs it most, and how the cover works when something you supplied goes wrong.
Product liability insurance (you’ll see products liability on policy documents; they’re the same cover) protects your business when a faulty product causes harm. If a claim is made, the policy pays the compensation and the legal fees of defending you, up to your chosen limit.
Claims typically involve:
The word “product” stretches further than most people expect. Stock you import, goods you rebrand, items you refurbish, devices you install and calibrate, even the packaging you dispatch orders in: if your business put it into someone’s hands, your business sits in the chain of liability.

Often, yes, and this is the part that catches professionals out. Liability doesn’t stop at the factory gate; it follows the supply chain. You can face a product liability claim for:
Quality control helps, but even careful checks can’t inspect a fault out of a sealed unit made three suppliers upstream. That’s precisely the gap this type of business insurance covers.
Every policy includes £1 million of products liability cover as standard, with the option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million, and a £250 excess on products liability claims. The cover protects against:
Real examples from the sort of products liability claims this cover exists for: a wholesaler defending claims after resold beauty products caused allergic reactions, and a food ingredients supplier covering recall logistics after suspected contamination in transit. Neither business made the product. Both carried the liability.
Any business that sells or supplies products to the public, even as a sideline to a professional service. Among the professionals we insure, it matters most to:
If your business is purely advice, your bigger risk is professional indemnity. But the line is thinner than it looks: hand a client a sample, a device or a printed manual, and you’ve supplied a product.

No, there’s no law requiring it, unlike employers’ liability once you have staff. The pressure is practical instead: retailers, marketplaces and trade clients often require proof of cover before stocking or working with you, and an uninsured injury claim can be ruinous. Most businesses that supply products treat it as essential.
Claims stemming from flaws in stock you import or source from suppliers, goods branded or customised to your specification, items you refurbish before resale, and the packaging you dispatch orders in. Legal costs for intellectual property infringement claims over branded items you resell are covered too. In short: if it leaves your business in a parcel, it’s your product.
They’re separate covers for separate failures, and having one doesn’t extend to the other. The good news is that with Professional Saver the question is academic, because every policy includes both automatically. If you’re insured elsewhere, check your public liability policy carefully; product cover is often a paid add-on rather than a given.
You can still be the one sued, particularly if the manufacturer is overseas or has vanished. Claims tend to land on whichever business in the supply chain the customer can actually reach. Your policy defends the claim either way, which is exactly why businesses that “just resell” still carry this cover.
Supplying food and ingredients carries classic product liability risks, from contamination to food poisoning claims, and our cover extends to recall costs and legal defence in those scenarios. If food is a core part of your business, tell us when you quote so the cover matches the exposure.
Public and product liability insurance are close siblings, which is why we bundle them. Public liability insurance covers harm caused by your business activities: what you do. Product liability covers harm caused by things you’ve supplied: what you hand over, after you’ve handed it over. A visitor tripping over your display stand is a public liability claim; the kettle you sold them catching fire at home is a product liability claim.
Because both covers come automatically with every Professional Saver policy, you never have to work out in advance which side of the line a future claim will fall on.
With us, it’s not a separate line on the bill. Products liability is included in every policy from £55* a year, alongside public liability and the rest of the automatic covers, so the real question is what your whole policy costs, and that follows the type of business you run, your turnover, the level of cover you choose and your claims history. Get a product liability insurance quote online and the price appears in about five minutes; if you compare quotes elsewhere, check whether product cover is included or an extra.
Products liability comes built into every Professional Saver policy, next to public liability, from £55* a year, backed by an insurer rated AA- (Stable) by Standard & Poor’s. Whether you sell prints, install devices or ship a thousand parcels a month across the hundreds of professions we cover, get a quote online and the products you supply stop being the risk that keeps you up at night.
