What types of insurance do graphic designers need?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Graphic designer insurance covers work that is judged twice: once by the client who approves it, and again by the market, the lawyers and the rights holders after it ships. A logo that a competitor claims is too close to theirs, a font licence that didn’t cover the use, a rebrand blamed for a sales dip: design’s characteristic claims arrive after the invoice is paid, and they name the designer.

Professional Saver arranges business insurance for graphic designers, illustrators and design studios from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity scaled to the work you put your name to. Get a quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

Professional indemnity insurance is the core of designers insurance, because design’s real claims are professional ones. Professional indemnity insurance protects you when a client alleges your work caused them financial loss: a print error that reached ten thousand brochures, a packaging design withdrawn over a compliance detail, a campaign that allegedly damaged the brand it was meant to build. Professional indemnity insurance covers the compensation and the legal fees of defending the claim, and defence is most of the story in design, where “the work failed” is an opinion argued expensively after the event.

The same cover carries design’s other native claim: intellectual property. Copyright infringement allegations, a typeface used outside its licence, stock imagery with the wrong rights, an illustration a rights holder says borrows too much, can arrive in good faith and still cost real money to answer. If your work touches other people’s IP daily, which in graphic design is simply the job, PI is not a nice-to-have.

Public liability insurance covers the physical side of a graphic design business: client meetings, press checks, studio visits and events. Public liability insurance covers injury to third parties and property damage done while working, a knocked-over screen in a client’s office, a trip over your kit bag, with £1 million as standard and options up to £10 million. Public liability insurance is what corporate clients and venues usually ask to see before you’re allowed on site.

Business equipment insurance protects the tools of a trade that lives on hardware: laptop, monitors, graphics tablet and the drives your archive sits on, covered against theft, loss and damage with a £100 excess. Employers’ liability insurance is legally required in most cases once your small business employs anyone, including freelance help who work under your direction; describe your arrangements when you get a quote and the right cover follows.

Do I really need professional indemnity insurance as a graphic designer?

If clients act on your work, yes. The commercial reality is that many won’t let you start without it: agency rosters, framework agreements and larger client contracts routinely name a required level of professional indemnity cover. The deeper reason is that design is subjective and money is not; when a client loses sales, the design is an easy place to put the blame, and a professional indemnity policy is what pays to separate a bad outcome from bad work. Cancelling PI between projects is the classic mistake: claims surface long after delivery, and the policy that answers is the one in force when the claim arrives, so keep cover continuous while any past work can still come back.

Why do graphic designers need insurance?

Because your work carries other people’s reputations. A brand identity is the client’s face in the market. When the market reacts badly, the conversation turns legal quickly, and insurance in place is what keeps a creative dispute from becoming a personal financial one.

Because IP law doesn’t grade on intent. Innocent similarity, an expired licence, an unclear stock agreement: copyright claims don’t require you to have done anything cynical, only something arguable. Defending even a weak claim without cover costs more than years of premiums.

Because a design business runs on its kit. Losing the laptop and tablet doesn’t just cost hardware; it costs every deadline until they’re replaced. Equipment cover keeps a theft from becoming a client-losing event, which for a freelance designer is the real risk.

What does our graphic designer insurance cover?

Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then shape the insurance policies to your design business:

  • Professional indemnity for negligence, design errors and IP claims, at the level of cover your contracts require
  • Business equipment insurance for laptops, tablets, monitors and studio kit
  • Employers’ liability when you take on staff, usually a legal requirement
  • Personal accident insurance, so an injury that stops you working doesn’t stop the income with it

Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad is included for up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada.

How much does graphic designer insurance cost?

From £55* a year for the base policy. The insurance cost then follows the shape of the work: the level of professional indemnity your clients require, the value of equipment insured, whether you employ anyone, and your claims history. A freelance graphic designer with a laptop and a modest client list sits at the affordable end of the range; a studio with staff and serious hardware pays more because more is at risk. FAQs

Graphic Designer & Illustrator Insurance FAQs

Mostly no, with one exception: employers’ liability insurance is legally required once you employ anyone, and the fines accrue daily. Everything else is contractual rather than statutory, but contracts do the enforcing: plenty of clients treat proof of PI and public liability as a condition of the purchase order.

Professional indemnity answers for the work: designs that allegedly failed, infringed or misled, and the financial loss that followed. Public liability answers for your physical presence: injury and property damage around meetings and site visits. A designer who never leaves the studio still needs PI; one who pitches, presses and installs needs both, and most working designers are the second kind.

Both, and freelancers are most of who we insure. Cover scales to a design business of one: the £55* starting point assumes exactly that shape, and you can raise limits as the client list grows. Illustrators, brand designers and digital designers all quote the same way, by describing the work honestly.

Allegations that your professional work infringed someone’s IP sit on the professional indemnity side, which pays to defend the claim and to settle a valid one. What no policy replaces is licence hygiene: keep records of font, stock and image rights per project, because the paper trail is the cheapest defence you’ll ever own.

Business equipment cover can follow the kit to client offices, co-working spaces and shoots; tell us how the hardware travels when you quote. If you make a claim for a stolen laptop, the £100 excess applies and the point of the cover is speed, getting you back to billable work.

Same policy, same logic: your drawings carry the same IP exposure and client dependence as any design work. Describe what you actually make when you quote, and see our design insurance page for the wider family of design professions we cover. Neighbouring specialisms have pages of their own, so go straight to fashion designer insurance, image consultant insurance or system designers insurance if one of those describes the work better.
