Get a QuoteOur Business Contents & Equipment cover includes:
Business contents insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing the things your business runs on, from computers and monitors to desks, fittings and specialist equipment, when they’re stolen or damaged. For a professional, the kit is rarely the expensive part: it’s the half-finished client work on the stolen laptop and the billable days lost while you re-equip.
With Professional Saver, business contents and equipment cover is an optional cover you add to your policy, tailored to the equipment you actually own, and the policy already includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and financial loss cover as standard from £55* a year. The excess on contents claims is £100, the lowest on our policy.
Business contents insurance (you’ll also see it called commercial contents insurance) protects the movable things inside your business premises: equipment, computers, furniture, fittings and, for businesses that sell goods, stock. If a fire, flood, burglary or accident takes them out, a business contents insurance policy pays to repair or replace them so you can keep trading.
It’s the business equivalent of home contents cover, and the distinction matters more than people expect: home insurance policies typically exclude business equipment, so the laptop that’s covered as a personal possession on Friday evening often isn’t covered as a work tool on Monday morning. If your kit earns money, it needs its own cover.
Customers are always telling us how much they saved by switching
We’ve been providing insurance to businesses since 1984
Insurance provided by a Standard & Poor’s ‘AA- Stable’ rated insurer
Our Professional Saver Insurance (Covea) has been independently rated 5 Stars by Defaqto – the highest possible rating, awarded to excellent products with a comprehensive range of features and benefits.
Our commercial contents cover is built for what a small business actually owns:
As a reference point, one of our real quote examples includes £10,000 of business contents and equipment cover for a two-person limited company. You choose your own sum when you quote; the right figure is what it would genuinely cost to re-equip, bought new, in a hurry.
If your equipment regularly leaves base, working at client sites, on location or in a co-working space, tell us when you get your quote so the cover matches where the kit actually lives. The same goes for stock if you sell physical goods: stock cover needs the value declaring, especially around seasonal peaks.
There’s no legal requirement to hold it; this one is pure self-interest. Three questions settle it for most business owners:
1. Could you re-equip from cash tomorrow? If losing your computers, kit and furniture in one night would strain the business, the insurance could be the difference between a bad week and a shut business.
2. Does your work stop when the kit stops? For most professionals, no laptop means no invoicing. The claim isn’t really about hardware; it’s about the business interruption and the income the hardware produces, which is also why short term income protection sits next to contents cover on our options list.
3. Are you relying on home insurance? If you work from home, check your home policy before assuming anything: business equipment is typically excluded, and running a business from home without telling your home insurer can cause problems that reach well beyond the laptop.
Business contents insurance costs follow the value you’re insuring: the level of cover you choose, what the equipment is, where it’s kept and your claims history all feed the price. Because it’s an add-on to a Professional Saver policy rather than a standalone product, you’re not paying a second policy’s overheads, and the whole package starts from £55* a year with monthly instalments available.
Two figures worth knowing before you compare business contents insurance quotes elsewhere: our contents excess is £100, and the base policy already includes public liability insurance and the other liability covers most competitors price separately.
Buildings, for one: this is contents cover, not commercial buildings insurance, so the structure itself belongs on a landlord’s or property owner’s policy. Wear and tear isn’t insurable either; the cover responds to events, not age. And anything you haven’t told us about that materially changes the risk, like high-value stock or kit permanently kept off-site, needs declaring when you quote, or a claim can get complicated exactly when you least want it to.
Your equipment is the one part of the business a thief can carry. Add business contents and equipment cover to protect your business, from £55* a year for the whole Professional Saver package shaped to your business needs, backed by an insurer rated AA- (Stable) by Standard & Poor’s, and a stolen laptop goes back to being an inconvenience instead of a crisis. Run a business insurance quote online and the price appears in about five minutes.

Not usually, and not with us either: business types differ, and contents and equipment cover is an optional extra precisely so professionals who own little more than a laptop don’t pay for cover they don’t need. If your business owns real equipment, add it when you quote; if you’re not sure, price it both ways and the decision usually makes itself.
If your work equipment matters to your income, yes, because home contents insurance typically won’t cover it. A home-based business often has more exposed kit than an office-based one: no separate premises, no commercial alarm, and everything in one place. Declaring a realistic sum for your equipment costs little and removes the grey area entirely.
Stock can be covered, but it needs declaring separately with its own value, because stock behaves differently from equipment: it turns over, it peaks seasonally, and its value on the shelf isn’t its value on the invoice. Tell us the contents and stock you hold and when it peaks, and the insurance can cover both at values that match.
£100, the lowest excess on a Professional Saver policy. Check your quotation for the exact figures that apply to you, as excesses can vary with the type of work you do.
Price the re-purchase, not the receipt. List what you’d have to buy to be working again by Friday, cost it new (not what you paid three years ago), and insure that number. Under-insuring is the classic contents mistake: it saves pennies on the premium and surfaces at the worst possible moment.
