What is hotel and catering consultants insurance?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Hospitality consulting is consulting with wet floors. You carry the ordinary risks of any adviser, recommendations that clients act on and sometimes regret, plus the physical risks of the places the work happens: kitchens, function rooms, cellars and building sites mid-refurbishment. Hotel and catering consultants insurance covers both halves in one policy.

Professional Saver insures hospitality consultants from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity scaled to the projects you advise on. Quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

It’s the consultants’ package adjusted for where hospitality work actually happens. Professional indemnity covers claims that your advice caused a client financial loss: a menu engineering project that missed its numbers, a compliance recommendation that didn’t hold up, a launch plan that went wrong expensively. Public liability covers injury and property damage while you’re on site, which for a catering consultant is most of the working week.

Around those sit the usual supports: equipment insurance for the laptop and kit that travel with you, personal accident cover, and employers’ liability if you build a team. One clarification worth making early: if you run a catering business rather than advise them, caterers’ cover (mobile catering, vans, kitchens of your own) is a different product from consultants’ catering insurance, and our insurance policies on this page are tailored to the advisers.

Why do hospitality consultants need insurance?

Your advice runs businesses. When a hotel re-engineers its operations or a restaurant group rewrites its food safety procedures on your recommendation, the stakes are their revenue and their inspection results. If the outcome disappoints and the client claims your advice caused the loss, professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and defence costs, whether or not the claim succeeds.

Your workplace is other people’s premises. Consultants who work in kitchens, dining rooms and half-built hotels carry more slip, trip and damage risk than any desk-bound adviser. Public liability insurance covers you when a member of staff trips over your bag during a service audit, or your equipment damages a client’s fit-out, with £1 million of cover as standard and options up to £10 million.

Your clients ask for proof. Hotel groups, catering companies and venue operators bring procurement processes with them, and proof of insurance at stated limits is standard onboarding. The certificate is ready to download the same day you quote.

What does our hotel and catering consultants insurance cover?

Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses insurance and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then add what the consultancy needs:

  • Professional indemnity at the level your contracts specify, covering negligence, confidentiality breaches and the other claims that follow advice
  • Business contents and equipment cover for the kit that travels between sites, with a £100 excess
  • Personal accident cover, because a consultant who can’t visit sites can’t invoice
  • Employers’ liability, usually a legal requirement once you employ anyone

Products liability earns its place here more than in most consultancy: if your work extends to supplying or specifying equipment and products for clients’ kitchens, claims from faulty items sit on that cover.

How much does it cost?

From £55* a year for the base policy. Professional indemnity is the main variable, priced on the size of the projects your advice steers; a consultant guiding a single restaurant’s menu pays differently from one running a hotel group’s compliance programme. Get a quote online, see each cover itemised in the insurance quote, and spread the cost monthly if that suits the consultancy’s cash flow.

FAQs

Hotel & Catering Consultants Insurance FAQs

Only employers’ liability, and only once you have staff. The rest is contractual: hotel groups and contract caterers routinely require proof of public liability and professional indemnity before you start, so in practice the covers are as compulsory as the client makes them.

Yes; your cover follows your work onto clients’ premises, which is exactly where hospitality consulting needs it. Working kitchens are among the more claim-prone environments a consultant can stand in, which is why this page exists separately from our general consultants insurance.

A client who blames your compliance advice for a failed inspection, lost rating or closed kitchen is making a professional indemnity claim. PI cover pays the legal and compensation costs, and because such claims can arrive months after the project ends, keep the cover running continuously rather than per engagement.

Interim and consulting work often blur in hospitality, and the policy can flex across both; describe the mix when you quote. If interim roles are most of your work, our interim manager insurance page covers that pattern directly, and if you audit kitchens against a scheme rather than advise on the business, food hygiene consultant insurance is the closer fit.
