What insurance does an auditor need?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Auditor insurance covers the professional whose signature says a system works. An internal audit that missed a control failure, a quality audit that recommended certification a customer later disputes, a supplier audit that cleared a factory before a batch went wrong: the audit itself becomes the evidence, and the auditor becomes the person who should have caught it. Professional indemnity leads the policy for that reason.

Professional Saver arranges business insurance for independent internal, quality, compliance and ISO auditors from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity scaled to what your findings decide. Get a quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

Professional indemnity insurance answers for the audit. Where a client alleges your professional negligence caused them financial loss, a nonconformity not raised, a control weakness passed over, a recommendation to certify that a regulator or customer later challenges, professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and the legal costs of the defence. The defence tends to be the expensive part, because an audit is a sample taken on a day and a claim is argued with everything that happened afterwards in plain view.

Public liability insurance covers the visiting. Audit work is done in other people’s premises: offices, factories, warehouses, kitchens and construction sites, often walking production areas with a clipboard. Where a third party is injured or property is damaged around your work, public liability insurance covers the compensation and legal costs, with £1 million as standard and options up to £10 million, which is what many site inductions require before letting an auditor past reception.

Business equipment cover protects the laptop and kit an audit trail lives on (£100 excess), and employers’ liability is usually a legal requirement once you employ or subcontract other auditors. Products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover are included as standard in every policy.

Statutory audit is a different market

Worth being direct. If you carry out statutory financial audit as a registered auditor under a recognised supervisory body, that work comes with its own regulatory insurance requirements and a specialist market to match, and this is not that product. We would rather say so here than sell you cover that does not fit the registration you hold.

This page is for the wider audit profession: internal auditors, quality and ISO auditors, compliance and regulatory auditors, supplier and ethical audit specialists, and food or safety auditors working to a scheme. If you do a mix, describe it when you quote so the cover is built around the work rather than the word “auditor”.

Why do auditors need insurance?

Because a clean report gets relied on by people who never hired you. Certification bodies, customers and regulators all take comfort from an audit they did not commission. When something fails, the circle of people looking for the auditor is wider than the client list.

Because sampling is a defensible method that reads badly in hindsight. Every auditor knows a report covers what was examined. Every claimant argues it should have covered the thing that broke. Cover funds that argument, which is otherwise funded personally.

Because contracts and schemes require it. Certification bodies, audit panels and larger clients routinely require professional indemnity and public liability at named levels before appointing an independent auditor, and the certificate is often part of the approval pack.

What does our auditor policy cover?

Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then shape the cover to the practice:

  • Professional indemnity for negligence claims over findings, reports and certification recommendations, at the level your contracts name
  • Business equipment cover for the laptop and kit that travel between sites
  • Employers’ liability for employed or directed auditors, usually a legal requirement
  • Personal accident cover, for a job spent walking factories and warehouses

Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad is included for up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada, which covers the occasional overseas supplier audit without a second policy.

FAQs

Auditor Insurance FAQs

Not by law, unless a scheme or regulator you work under says so, but commercially it is close to unavoidable: client contracts, certification bodies and audit panels name it as a condition of appointment, usually at £1 million or more. It is also the only cover that answers the risk that defines the job, which is an opinion relied on and later disputed.

PI responds on a claims made basis, meaning the policy live when the claim arrives is the one that answers, provided cover has run continuously since the audit. Audit claims surface when the failure surfaces, which can be long after the report was signed, so continuity matters more than the premium.

Yes: public liability follows you onto client premises, and worldwide liability cover handles temporary work abroad for up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada. Tell us where you audit when you quote, especially if North America is regular, so nothing is assumed.

Yes, quoted for the mix. Many auditors also advise, and our consultants insurance page covers that side, while health and safety consultant insurance fits safety-focused audit work specifically.
