What insurance do web developers need?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Web developer insurance covers the gap between “the site works on my machine” and “the client’s store was down all weekend.” When a build breaks, a launch slips or a brief turns out to have meant something else entirely, the client’s losses look for an address, and the developer’s is the one on the invoice. Professional indemnity insurance answers, which is why it leads the policy for developers.

Professional Saver’s insurance policies cover web developers and studios from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity matched to your contracts. Website developer insurance and web developer insurance are the same product; the claims don’t care which way you searched. Quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

The types of insurance stack the same way across the IT world, PI first:

Professional indemnity insurance covers claims that your work caused a client financial loss: the checkout that failed on launch day, the migration that dropped orders, the accessibility requirement the brief said and the build didn’t. Professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and the legal defence, including breach of confidentiality and accidental IP infringement, the developer’s quiet second risk when assets, fonts and libraries arrive from everywhere. Agencies and client contracts routinely require PI at £1 million or more, and it works on a claims-made basis, so keep it running between projects.

Public liability insurance carries the physical world: an accident at a client workshop, a knocked server in a comms room. Desk-heavy work keeps this risk modest, and public liability insurance comes as standard at £1 million with options up to £10 million, which is exactly what most contracts want to see anyway.

Business contents and equipment cover protects the machines the work lives on (£100 excess), and employers’ liability joins when a freelance practice becomes a studio, as the law usually requires. One honest note: we don’t sell a standalone cyber insurance policy; PI can pick up some claims related to data handling, and if your work carries serious cyber exposure, say so when you quote so the cover is set up honestly.

Why do web developers need insurance?

Because the contract says so. Agency placements and direct client contracts name required covers and limits, usually PI and PL together, and the certificate is part of onboarding. This is the most common reason developers arrive at this page with a deadline.

Because websites are load-bearing. A client’s site is their shop, their booking system, their lead pipeline. When it breaks, the loss is measured in their revenue, not your day rate, and claims scale accordingly.

Because scope is a negotiation that outlives the project. “That was out of scope” and “that was clearly implied” are the two sentences most developer disputes are built from. PI funds the argument either way when a client makes a claim, which beats funding it personally.

How much does web developer cover cost?

From £55* a year for the base business insurance policy, with professional indemnity the main variable: the level of cover your contracts demand, the commercial weight of the sites you ship, and your claims history. A freelancer building brochure sites sits at the affordable end; a studio shipping e-commerce builds carries e-commerce consequences. FAQs

Website Developer Insurance FAQs

In practice, yes: agencies and most direct clients require it before contracts start, and the risk it covers, a build whose failure costs the client money, is the defining risk of the job. £1 million is the common contractual floor, and the online quote prices your actual work rather than a generic label.

Security claims land in the gap between your professional service and the client’s own responsibilities, and the honest answer depends on what was agreed and what went wrong. PI can respond to claims about your professional work, including some data-handling responsibilities; we don’t sell standalone cyber cover, so describe security-critical work when you quote and the conversation happens before the incident rather than after.

Yes; describe the mix when you quote. Web, app and broader software work share the same claim shapes, and if your work leans more consultancy than build, our IT consultants insurance page covers that contractor world in detail, IR35 included. If you build software products rather than websites, software developer insurance is the page written for that work.

Remote work for overseas clients is common in web development, and the liability picture depends on contracts and jurisdictions; our policies include worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad (up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada). Tell us where your clients are when you quote, especially the American ones, and the cover gets set up around reality.
