Tutor insurance protects the moment your kitchen table becomes a classroom. A pupil trips on your stairs, a parent claims your coaching cost their child a grade, or your laptop full of lesson plans is stolen: each one is a business claim, even if tutoring is only part of what you do.
Professional Saver covers private tutors and teachers from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity and equipment cover as options. Quote online in five minutes, and your documents are ready the same day, which helps when a tuition agency asks for proof of cover.
This is business insurance shaped around private tuition: lessons in your home, in pupils’ homes, in hired rooms and increasingly online. You’ll see it called private tutor insurance, teaching insurance or insurance for tutors; same policy, different label, whether you describe yourself as a tutor or a private teacher. The core is public liability cover for accidents and injuries during lessons, with professional indemnity available for claims about the teaching itself.
The label stretches a long way, and the cover stretches with it: tutors and teachers of academic subjects, languages, exam coaching and specialist private tutoring all fit the same policy shape. Music teachers get their own page (instruments change the equipment maths), and music teachers insurance covers that world specifically. Advising institutions on policy or admissions is a different job from teaching pupils, so that work belongs on educational consultant insurance.

Three reasons, in the order tutors usually meet them:
Pupils visit your home. A child slipping on a loose stair carpet, a parent tripping over a schoolbag in the hallway: public liability insurance covers the compensation and legal costs when a lesson leads to an injury claim. Home insurance typically won’t; running a business from home, even a few hours of private tutoring a week, usually sits outside a home policy’s cover.
Parents are paying for outcomes. When a family invests in exam preparation and the grades disappoint, most accept it; occasionally one claims your teaching or advice caused a loss. Professional indemnity insurance answers claims about the quality of your professional service, and the insurance can help long after lessons end, because claims about advice often arrive late. Tuition agencies increasingly expect tutors to hold it.
Agencies and schools ask for proof. Tuition agencies, schools and other organisations buying in tutoring support routinely require evidence of public liability cover before they’ll place pupils with you. The certificate has become part of the onboarding paperwork, alongside your DBS check.
Our insurance policies all include public liability cover of £1 million as standard (with options up to £10 million) for accidental injury and damage during lessons, plus products liability, legal expenses and financial loss cover, from £55* a year. Optional covers are chosen during the quote:
* Total number of live policies as of 31/10/2025
From £55* a year for the whole policy, with the price of the business insurance moving on the optional covers you add and the scale of your tutoring. A self-employed tutor teaching a handful of pupils sits at the bottom of the range; a tuition business with premises, equipment and subcontracted staff pays more because there’s more to protect. Monthly instalments are available, and the online quote shows the cost of each option separately, so you only buy the cover you need.
Tutoring moves between kitchen tables, pupils’ homes and video calls, and the cover should follow without paperwork every time. Get a quote online from £55* a year, backed by an insurer rated AA- (Stable) by Standard & Poor’s, and teach knowing the business behind the lessons is protected.
No, with one exception: employers’ liability insurance is legally required in most cases if you employ other tutors. Everything else is commercially driven, and the drive is real: agencies, schools and many parents now expect proof of public liability cover before lessons start.
The claim doesn’t care about your hours. A pupil injured during a paid lesson is a business liability whether you teach three hours a week or thirty, and home insurance typically excludes business activities entirely. Part-timers also sit at the cheapest end of the premium range, which makes the cover an easy decision.
Yes, and the risk profile shifts rather than disappears: less slip-and-trip, more professional indemnity, because the teaching itself is all that’s left to claim about. If most of your tuition is online, say so when you quote and weight the policy accordingly.
Your cover follows the lessons, so private tuition in family homes, libraries and hired classrooms is within scope. Damage to a pupil’s home during a lesson lands on the same public liability cover as an injury at yours.
They’re separate things: the DBS check is about safeguarding, the insurance about liability, and neither replaces the other. Agencies usually ask for both. We don’t require a DBS check to quote, but if an agency’s paperwork lists both, the insurance half takes five minutes online.
