What types of insurance do software engineers need?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Software engineer insurance covers work that fails quietly and gets expensive suddenly. A bug that corrupts a client’s data, a security vulnerability that ships in your commit, an architecture decision that can’t scale when the client’s business does: code problems become money problems inside someone else’s company, and the claim travels back along the invoice to the engineer who wrote it.

Professional Saver arranges business insurance for software engineers, developers and small software development companies from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity scaled to the systems your code touches. Get a quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.

Professional indemnity insurance is the heart of software developer insurance, because software’s real claims are professional ones. Professional indemnity insurance covers claims arising from your work causing a client financial loss: bugs and coding errors that crashed systems or corrupted data, security vulnerabilities you introduced, technical recommendations that proved wrong, deadlines missed with commercial consequences. Professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and the defence costs, and defence is where the money usually goes: whether a failure was your negligence, the client’s requirements or the third-party API that changed under everyone is exactly the kind of argument that costs six figures to settle without cover.

Public liability insurance covers the physical side of a mostly digital job: client site visits, on-premise deployments, meetings and demos. If a member of the public or a client suffers injury or property damage around your work, public liability insurance covers the compensation and legal fees, with £1 million as standard and options up to £10 million where enterprise clients require it.

One boundary drawn honestly: cyber. If a vulnerability in code you wrote leads to a client’s data breach, that claim can sit on the professional indemnity side, it’s your professional work being blamed. Cyber insurance proper, cover for your own systems being attacked, your own ransomware event, your own business interruption, is a separate product we don’t sell. A development business holding client data or production access should name that exposure at quote stage and consider standalone cyber liability insurance alongside this policy rather than pretending one policy does both jobs.

Business equipment cover protects the hardware the work lives on (£100 excess), and employers’ liability is legally required in most cases once a software company employs anyone, including contract developers working under your direction.

Why do software engineers need insurance?

Because your code runs inside other people’s businesses. When it fails, the damage is measured in their downtime, their lost income and their customers, not your day rate. PI cover is what keeps the size of a claim connected to your insurance rather than your savings.

Because contracts demand it before clients trust it. Agencies, consultancies and end clients routinely require proof of professional indemnity at stated levels before a contract starts, and IR35-era contracting has only sharpened that habit. The certificate is part of getting hired.

Because software failures surface late. The bug ships in March and detonates in November, often after the engagement has ended. PI works on the policy in force when the claim arrives, not when the code was written, which is why developers keep cover continuous rather than per contract.

What does our software engineer policy cover?

Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then shape the insurance policies to the development business:

  • Professional indemnity for coding errors, negligence claims and bad-advice allegations, at the level your contracts require
  • Business equipment cover for the machines, monitors and kit the work depends on
  • Employers’ liability once you hire, usually a legal requirement
  • Personal accident cover, because a one-person dev shop has no bench

Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad is included for up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada.

FAQs

Software Engineer Insurance FAQs

If clients rely on your code, yes, and most contracts won’t leave it optional: PI at £100,000 to £1 million is a standard clause in development and contracting agreements. Freelance software work concentrates the risk rather than shrinking it, because there’s no employer’s policy standing behind you.

Claims that your professional work caused financial loss: bugs that broke production, data corrupted by your migration, a vulnerability traced to your code, integrations that didn’t do what you advised they would, and deadlines whose slippage cost the client money. It funds legal defence as well as settlements, which matters because most software disputes are arguments about causation, not confessions.

Where you work doesn’t change the cover; remote is simply how software gets built. Past projects are covered by the policy in force when a claim arrives, provided cover has run continuously since the work was done, which is the practical argument against letting PI lapse between contracts.

Employers’ liability, almost always, from the first hire, with daily fines for going without. Everything else is contractual, but no less real for it: procurement teams enforce PI requirements more reliably than statutes do. Our IT consultants insurance page covers the wider consulting side of the industry.

Same policy family, described honestly at quote stage: app developers, web development shops and specialist software consultancies all quote by explaining what they build and who relies on it. Titles matter less than the blast radius of the work, though if you would describe yourself as a coder for hire rather than an engineer, computer programmer insurance is the page written in those terms.

How much does software engineer cover cost?

From £55* a year for the base policy. The insurance cost tracks what your code can break: the level of professional indemnity your contracts name, the criticality of the systems you build (a marketing site and a payments platform carry different consequences), whether you employ anyone, and your claims history. A freelance software developer on small business projects sits at the affordable end; get a quote online, itemised in about five minutes, with monthly instalments available.
