Fire risk assessor insurance covers a profession whose paperwork is the first thing pulled from the file after a fire. A risk assessment that missed a compartmentation defect, an evacuation strategy that didn’t survive a real alarm, a recommendation the client says was never made clearly: when something burns, the assessment is read backwards by insurers, enforcing authorities and often the building’s occupants. Professional indemnity leads the policy because that document, not a dropped tool, is where the exposure sits.
Professional Saver arranges specialist insurance for fire risk assessors, fire safety consultants and fire engineers from £55* a year, with public liability as standard and professional indemnity scaled to the buildings you assess. Get a quote online in five minutes; documents arrive the same day.
Professional indemnity insurance answers for the assessment and the advice. If a client alleges your negligence caused them financial loss, a hazard the fire risk assessment didn’t identify, fire safety guidance applied to the wrong building type, a remedial specification that failed its purpose, professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and the legal costs of the defence. That is what professional negligence looks like in this profession, and professional indemnity cover is the financial protection standing behind your professional advice. Fire work concentrates this risk more than most consultancy: the consequences are severe, the scrutiny afterwards is intense, and the assessment carries your name for as long as the building stands.
Public liability insurance covers your physical presence in other people’s buildings: surveys, inspections, walkarounds through occupied premises and live construction. Where a third party is injured or property damage occurs around your work, public liability insurance covers the compensation and legal costs, with £1 million as standard and options up to £10 million, which is what principal contractors and managing agents commonly specify before granting access.
Business equipment cover protects the laptop, camera and measuring kit an assessment depends on (£100 excess), and employers’ liability insurance is usually a legal requirement once the consultancy employs anyone, associate assessors included. Products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover come as standard in every insurance policy.

Worth settling early, because the two get confused and the products genuinely differ. If your business installs and maintains fire protection systems, fire alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers, passive fire protection, dampers, you are buying contractors insurance: a trade policy built around tools, vans, labour and the work you physically carry out. We would point you to the trade product honestly rather than sell you the wrong one.
This page is for the advisory side: fire risk assessors, fire safety consultants and fire engineers whose deliverable is the assessment, the strategy or the report, even where site attendance and remedial oversight follow it. Plenty of businesses do both, so describe the split when you quote and the fire protection consultancy cover is weighted to the reality rather than the job title. A fire protection consultant and an installer face different claims, and one insurance solution should not pretend otherwise.
Because the assessment outlives the invoice. A fire risk assessment sits on file and gets relied on by owners, agents, insurers and enforcing authorities long after you were paid. The claim, when it comes, is aimed at a document that may be years old.
Because responsibility is shared but blame concentrates. The responsible person under fire safety law keeps their legal duty; that does not stop them, or their insurer, pointing at the assessor who advised them. Cover funds the argument about what was assessed, what was recommended and what was actually done.
Because clients check before instructing. Managing agents, landlords, principal contractors and public-sector frameworks routinely require proof of professional indemnity and public liability at named levels. Having insurance in place is a condition of the instruction, and your certificate is available online the day cover starts.
Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then shape the insurance cover to the practice:
Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad is included for up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada.
One point to raise at quote stage rather than assume: describe the building types and the scope you actually assess, including any external wall or cladding work. No assessor is legally obliged to have insurance the way an employer is, but a professional indemnity insurance policy only responds to what was disclosed to it. Fire assessment is a closely scrutinised market, so precision when you buy is what makes the certificate dependable when a claim tests it.
From £55* a year for the base policy, with professional indemnity the main variable: the type and height of buildings you assess, the level of cover your clients require, whether you employ anyone, and your claims history. A sole assessor working on small commercial premises and HMOs sits at the affordable end; complex or high-rise work carries consequences that the limits need to respect. There is no broker chain in between, so the insurance is tailored during the quote rather than after a phone call. A fire risk assessment is a professional judgement that only gets truly tested once. Get a fire risk assessor insurance quote online from £55* a year, backed by an insurer rated AA- (Stable) by Standard & Poor’s, and protect your business for as long as your assessments stay on file.

In practice it is unavoidable. It is not a statutory requirement in itself, but client contracts, managing agents and frameworks name it as a condition of instruction, and it is the only cover that answers the profession’s defining risk: an assessment blamed for what happened next. £1 million is the common floor, with more specified on larger portfolios.
PI responds on a claims made basis, meaning the policy in force when the claim arrives is the one that answers, provided cover has run continuously since the work was done. In fire work that continuity matters more than the premium, because the claim arrives with the incident rather than the invoice, and run-off cover is the thing to ask about if you ever close the consultancy.
Describe the arrangement when you quote. Associates working under your name change both the employers’ liability position and who answers for whose report, and who counts as an employee is a working-arrangements question rather than a job-title one.
Yes, quoted for the mix: many consultants run fire and health and safety consultancy together, and insurance for health and safety work sits in the same policy. Our health and safety consultant insurance page covers that side specifically, and both sit inside one policy with a single renewal date. Assessors whose main work is EPCs and building energy performance want energy assessor insurance, which is a different assessment discipline with its own page.
