What insurance do wedding photographers need?

Our standard cover is:

  • £1 million cover for public and products liability (with an option to increase to £2 million, £5 million or £10 million)
  • £10,000 cover for any financial loss (£50K cover optional)
  • Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad for up to 14 days (excluding the USA and Canada)

Wedding photographer insurance exists for the one job photography can’t retake. A corrupted card, a stolen bag, a guest tripping over your light stand mid-ceremony: every risk in general photography is sharpened here by the fact that the day happens once. The couple can forgive a lot; the calendar forgives nothing.

Professional Saver insures wedding photographers from £55* a year, with the public liability venues require as standard, and professional indemnity and camera equipment cover as options. Quote online in five minutes; the certificate is ready for the venue the same day.

Public liability insurance is the cover wedding venues ask to see, often at £1 million or £2 million, before they’ll confirm you as a supplier. It covers compensation and legal costs if a guest is injured or property damaged through your work: the tripod trip during the group shots, the knocked candle arrangement, the light stand and the dance floor. Public liability insurance comes as standard with every policy, with options up to £10 million.

Professional indemnity insurance covers the claim wedding photographers actually lose sleep over: the images themselves. Corrupted cards, a failed backup, undelivered galleries, a missed shot list; when a couple claims your professional service cost them the record of their day, professional indemnity insurance pays the compensation and legal costs. No policy can reshoot a wedding, but PI is the difference between a devastating apology and a devastating apology plus a five-figure personal bill.

Camera equipment cover protects the kit that shoots a wedding, two bodies, fast glass, flashes, often £10,000+ in one bag, through our business contents and equipment cover with a £100 excess. Tell us how the kit travels and where it sleeps on wedding nights when you quote, so the cover matches the reality of the job.

Why do wedding photographers need insurance?

Venues have made it mandatory in practice. Most wedding venues run approved-supplier arrangements, health and safety conditions or hire terms that require photographers to carry public liability insurance at a stated level. No certificate, no access; and the request usually arrives weeks before the date, with the couple cc’d.

The working conditions are a claims recipe. Crowded rooms, champagne, dance floors, children, low light and your equipment threaded through all of it. Nobody needs to be careless for an accident to happen at a wedding; that’s what the champagne is for.

The stakes are emotional, so disputes escalate. A disappointed commercial client negotiates; a disappointed couple, backed by two families, tends not to. Cover means the dispute is handled professionally, with legal support, instead of consuming your season.

What does our wedding photographer insurance cover?

Every policy includes public liability, products liability, legal expenses and £10,000 of financial loss cover as standard, from £55* a year. You then build the policy to protect your business at weddings:

  • Professional indemnity for image loss, delivery failures and service disputes
  • Camera equipment cover for bodies, lenses and lighting, at replacement cost
  • Employers’ liability if you use second shooters or assistants under your direction, which is usually a legal requirement territory; describe your arrangement when you quote
  • Personal accident cover, because a photographer with a broken wrist in June is a wedding business with no summer

Worldwide liability cover for temporary work abroad (up to 14 days, excluding the USA and Canada) is included, which covers most destination weddings; mention travel plans when you quote so the equipment side follows too.

FAQs

Wedding Photographers’ Insurance FAQs

Most do, and the requirement is usually specific: public liability at £1 million or £2 million, occasionally £5 million for the largest estates, evidenced by a certificate before the date. Some venues run approved-supplier lists where the insurance check happens once a year instead of per wedding. Either way, the certificate is now part of a wedding photographer’s booking paperwork.

That’s a professional indemnity claim, and it’s the most important cover decision on this page. PI pays the compensation and legal costs when your service, including failed cards, lost galleries or missed moments, causes the couple loss. Keep it running continuously: claims can arrive months after the wedding, and PI only responds if the policy is live when the claim is made.

Cancellation losses are a business risk rather than a liability claim, so they sit outside the standard covers; contract terms and deposits are the practical protection there. What the policy does carry is everything that happens when weddings go ahead, which is where the ruinous numbers live.

If they work under your direction, they can count as employees for insurance purposes, which brings employers’ liability into the picture; it’s usually a legal requirement in that arrangement. If they’re genuinely independent, they need their own cover. Describe the model honestly when you quote and the policy matches it.

No; weddings can headline a broader photography business on one policy. Our photographers insurance page covers the general case, and the quote simply reflects your actual mix, weddings, portraits, events and commercial together.
